We purchase a tree that is dug rather than cut, and has a great big rootball so we can plant it. The one problem is that the tree can not be allowed to dry out. We decorate the tree and leave it outside in front of the large window, rather inside the house.

Each one of our grandchildren get a tree that is "theirs". Of course lately, we have had more grandchildren than Christmases. Some just have to wait in line.

Donovan's tree is the largest (of course), and was already at HH. It is the one that gets decorated each year.

This is Donovan and group decorating his tree.

Iain's tree was also already at HH, and it gets decorated a little (more each year). We landed late Memorial Day. I have been so busy, with being gone so long, work really piled up. And La Sirena moved last week-end so I have helped her pack and unpack, AND I have been suffering from the worst jet lag you can imagine. I have never been affected by it before. Not pleasant nor productive. By the way, in previous posts the day #s are all wrong, so ignore them.

Also, I have written this post 3 times. Each time I was just about to submit, the whole site went away. I hope I have better luck this time....

...but where was I? Oh, yes, we said good-bye to Lithuania. Well I still have stories to tell, later.

We left Lithuania at 11:30 PM on the 20th and arrived in Dublin at 12:30 AM. We had a room reserved right by the airport. We headed to Northern Ireland in the morning. All I can say is I never need to go back to Belfast again!

The people are really not friendly; although that is understandable. There is just not much charm in the city. Also, it was odd seeing statues erected to someone as if they were a hero, when I was raised considering them a villain. At any rate, we ended up not even eating there; we just moved on up the road. It was solemn, joyful, wild, crazy, food, drink, speeches, toasts.....
The actual parties went on from being picked up by motor coach at 12:30 on Sat. to being dropped back off at the hotel last night at sometime after midnight this morning (Monday).

So let's start with the ceremony. It was beautiful in a wooden church built in 1798, and the bride and groom were glowing.

more to follow....

I am therefore I have proof.........

Day: 3 We rented a car and drove to Pete's hometown. We walked around and it was wonderful. Yes we were here before, but it was a fun yet chaotic time, with many people and very little space. Today it was just Pete & I driving into the town, walking, experiencing his home.

We went and spent a little time at his family farm (we were scheduled to do this Sunday), and just dropped in. We were welcomed and spent an enjoyable hour or two visiting and walking through the old orchard and very vibrant garden that his father used to speak of.

Later we returned to the hotel with the Brit side of the wedding. It was fun & we all had dinner.

The groom's dad is named Pete. Both got on quite well with each other & the younger crowd started calling them "The Petes".

I saved the best for last...I pressured Pete into walking to the church; it was locked. He wanted to leave, but I went & found the priest. We were able to get an official copy of Pete's baptismal certificate. He really does exist; its official.

Family, Family, Family....

Day 2: This trip is more about visiting, not sightseeing, so it was a day of meeting in a coffeehouse with a new cousin (well new to us). She is delightful, beautiful, a musician and singer. In fact she travels all over the world singing. We had fun; she speaks a little English, I understand a very little Lithuanian (more facial expressions) & we depended on Pete's translation skills. I think he only turned to translate for me & said it in Lithuanian, twice. This is a big improvement.

Best news; she said we will meet about 40 more members of the Dambrauskas Family, Sat. at the wedding. He is beside himself with joy. He said he may end up with more family than me....I don't think so.

Tomorrow morning we leave for Vilkaviskis. So leaving Vilnius I had to do 2 things; see the Vilnius Madonna and sit at my favorite corner.

I did both. The Vilnius Black Madonna, the Mother of Compassion, takes my breath away. I still can not get over that I saw the original once in my life, let alone twice! She is widely renowned for her healing power and a symbol of harmony. I need all in my life at his moment.

There is a corner in the old town, that I just love. I was standing on the cobblestone last visit & a strange sense of having been there before washed over me. This time, I had. Pete & I had a drink and the rye bread & cheese snack that I love & can not get in Chicago. Well good-bye Vilnius, till we meet again.

mb

Shall I try again????

Ok, I have had a difficult time getting started again. As a matter of fact, I am just as busy as when I was in school...maybe even more so. I have not felt as if I finished, and I am dragging..so, let me try again. I never got back to writing about Lithuania, and now I am back visiting for a family wedding. Maybe this will be a good place to start....2 years later.

So Day 1. I think I may have caught up on my rest. I slept for 15 hours straight! This is just not me & if you had offered me a million dollars, I could not have gotten up. Pete was on his own until dinner. We then walked the city and noticed some differences. Two years of being part of the EU has made good differences & not so good differences.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5200340021264117074" style="FLOAT: right; She is exactly three days older than me. We have celebrated our birthdays in one form of togetherness or another, as long as I can remember. Hmmmm, I remember... while blogging about my grandson's 15th birthday, I remembered our shared 15th birthday(How can I have a grandson that age?).

I lived (and live) in Chicago, she lived (and lives) in Nebraska. We wrote very long letters to each other (paper & pen, believe it or not) and added to them every day. During year 14, leading up to the 15th birthday, we often wrote of how we were looking forward to this most important birthday. We were going to be allowed to date boys once we turned 15. As luck would have it, there was a dance scheduled just after I was to arrive from Chicago (I am sure it was to celebrate our birthdays). We had the boys all picked out. Not only that; we each had a new dress to wear to the dance.

I finally got to her farm, we ran upstairs to her (and her real sisters') bedroom. I pulled my new dress out of the suitcase & she pulled hers from her closet. Yep, you guessed it...the same dress! Well almost; they were very "mod" with a black and white, large houndstooth check bottom and three decorative buttons just above the checks, however one top was green & one top was orange. I really can't remember which color belonged to which one of us.

We just laughed, went to our dance & had a blast...the boys are long gone, but we are still sharing our birthdays...

A most happy birthday my dear cousin, Rita; and may we have very many more; together.

More Birthday Blogging - Late entry

It was pointed out to me that I did not birthday blog for my grandson, on June 10th. We have certainly had a wonderful and busy one. Two new grandchildren, many more family members, and other general life-building activities happened. We couldn't help but think this week-end of all the fun we had last year. The field looks quite empty without a big tent; and although everything is green now, its not quite like the sea of green of last year. Pete asked how long it would take us to call everyone to hurry over, put up a big tent & throw some food together. They were returning to Michigan from Nebraska where they celebrated her Mom's 94th birthday(Happy Birthday, Aunt Margaret!). Patty & her sisters began going through some of Aunt Margaret's zillions of pictures & Patty was showing some of them to us. Patty allowed me to borrow some & scan them. I was quite moved because some of these pictures were intimate slices of experiences that formed who I am.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EoSs8YeCT0Y/RiJJ08fQ06I/AAAAAAAAAA0/1zAKKjCM0KU/s320/small+A+day+in+the+life+at+Joyces+Grandma+Nora+in+the+foreground+Patty+Peterson+Mary+Joyce+Mary+Fenton+Rita+Joyce+Margaret+Mary+man+1965ish+small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053682905802396578" />
As I looked at this picture,I flew back in time. That is Aunt Margaret, as always, serving food on the far left, other people are all over the house(you can be sure there are as many people in the kitchen on the other side of that marvelous 2 sided butler pantry). Grandma Nora is in the center of things & cousins of all ages are in various states of relating...this picture truly represents my Aunt & Uncle Francis' farm. You could drop in at any time and be treated as if you were one of their own & had been expected. It really was a safe & wonderful place.

At the last big get together there, my daughter (LaSirena)kept running in & checking with me...is it ok if I go on the porch with the other kids?...yes, you can go anywhere on the farm with the other kids...then, Mom you mean I can go in the yard?...yes anywhere, I then watched her out the dining room window, she was immobile with amazement, in she came again...you mean I can go out of the yard, out of the fence...yes, anywhere. The concept of so much freedom, for my little city girl, was too much.

When I think of the Fenton clan, I think of this place. Looking at this picture, brought it all back. It also finally dawned on me (duh) that my goal to buy a farm was really just an attempt to provide for my family and friends, something close to what Margaret & Francis gave to all of us. So I really was not looking for a place of peace (I will have to change my blog ID) in Hummingbird Hill, but rather a place of easy relatedness; joyful chaos.

Joyful chaos brings me to my next picture & the true source of what I love about my life: the hugeness of my family. On the Fenton side alone I have 46 first cousins. My cousin Rita & I are smack in the middle. We are surrounded by the baby boomer crush of kids, & we girls are the majority (in this age group). Keep in mind I had all brothers until Theresie & Colleen came along at(my age) 10 & 14. When I got together with my girl cousins I was a little terrified & alot overjoyed.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EoSs8YeCT0Y/RiJUOcfQ08I/AAAAAAAAABE/I1KmakBjGjY/s400/Fenton+cousins+small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053694339005338562" />
This picture is of just a very few of my cousins on an ordinary day creating joyful chaos. They are all +/- 3 years of my age. I am not in this picture, but I have been in many similar situations. Note, it is not ALL girls, but have you ever seen such a giggling, gaggle of gangly girls? Don't you think I am very lucky,...er,blest?

Happy 30th, Kelly

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EoSs8YeCT0Y/RiGn58fQ05I/AAAAAAAAAAs/FIRfGC6as-A/s320/img154.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053504870818042770" />
My sweet neice Kelly turned 30 today. We were blessed to see so many members of our families, from all the various sides. We also missed some regulars which reminded us how important they are (Dawn, please don't ever vacation until Dec. 26th anymore)! We were able to enjoy cuddling Dexter and sharing the enjoyment of the current crop of kids playing with the dollhouse that Colleen took out this year which all of the grandkids (now adults) played with during their childhood Christmases.

We also found out that by next Christmas there will be at least 2 more babies...Congrats Erin and Tom & Angie and Chris.
I also was able to spend the holidays with many long time friends (no way I am going to call us "old"). New Years was spent at Hummingbird Hill; it was as warm as springtime. I was able to walk around and think about the past year, and what a year it was. Pete & I married and officially combined our families. We had a great green party surrounded by so many that we love. We went to Lithuania and found many more family members we had not known about...(I promise to get back to the trip soon).

I also thought about those we love and are no longer present; but are certainly still with us.
I also prayed that everyone still present, will be with us next year. Dex was born on December 7th, 2006 at 5:25 in the morning. He weighed 8lbs.6ozs. and was 20.25 inches long. My daughter shared the event with me. I have always thought that birth should be a time that mom's are with their daughters...but I do allow for a difference of opinion.

Dex has many women in his life that love him already. He has many on his Mom's paternal side & his Dad's side; however this discussion is just about Welch's. So I guess you should multiply everything by at least 4.

He has his Mom of course, and his cousin Rory who waited impatiently for him to come out. She talked to him all the time through his Mom's tummy. We had a great gathering of the clan at Dawn's. I think there were a zillion little girls running all over the place. Terrific fun.

When I think of Thanksgiving; I think of Grandmas, like the song above suggests. Thanksgivings and Grandmas seem to go together. While we were in Lithuania, I met an aunt of Pete's. I felt as if I knew her my entire life. Then as we were walking through the garden she was so proud of,I knew I HAD known her my whole life...she was just like my Grandma Foster! Although they had never met and they lived half the world apart and in different times, they are alike in so many ways. They both radiate(d) lively gentleness from their eyes, they have wonderful hearts, they are both short(and from me that is saying something), they both love(d) their gardens, have AMAZING granddaughters (Hi Daiva!), and they walk(ed) around the garden using sticks.

I use sticks when I walk around Hummingbird Hill. As a matter of fact Pete has fancied one up for me so it is my stick. Is it that wise women understand the power of trees reflected in their sticks? I have been to a crone ceremony where a crone stick was given to the new crone to symbolize her wisdom. Perhaps I should make crone canes for all interested future crones...anyone interested??????

No shock; real awe...

I know that it has been a very long time since I last wrote. It seems the very books I told you I love are pretty much drowning me. Not a complaint...just a fact. At any rate I am, for this post at least, leaving the subject of our wonderful trip to Lithuania. Instead I want to share our trip to Washington D.C.with you. I am currently here; leaving tomorrow. This has been a business trip with a very full agenda. We did, however, manage a few hours of sightseeing the night we arrived.

I don't care how many times I visit DC. It awes me. I believe that it is no accident this place became one of the most powerful places in the world. You can just feel that power surging under the ground.

Pete & I, when we see an unusually beautiful place, ask each other if we think the people who get to see it every day continue to appreciate it and remain awed by it... or do they get so used to it they become immune to the beauty? Worse, do our leaders we send here forget the glory of this place? When they come to represent us do they honor the trust they were sent with?

Do they sense the sacred?

I hope so...but Pete says the reason they built the Washington monument was to prevent "Abe" from seeing what they're up to at the other end of the mall...

I HOPE NOT

The Prince

I give up...I have not been able to upload the picture of the book where it belongs, so I will just post it here..."On the Commonwealth" by Nicolaus Machiavelli.

Oh for the love of bibliteka!

I have been drowning in books. Those that know me well, understand I am not complaining...only about the deadlines that go with them. This leads me to tell you about one of the best parts (I think they all are bests, but this is very special) of the trip. Sabina's cousin; Valdas (sp?), is a professor at the University of Vilnius. This University is one of the oldest in Europe. It's history dates back to at least the 1500's possibly older. There are portions of the buildings still in use from that era!

Well he was giving us a tour & wondered if we would like to see one of the libraries. He had received permission for us to see the 2nd best library. Well of course we wanted to go. We went through this magic door:

This led to delights unimagined.

The room was exquisite; everything I think all libraries should be (such as our old central library where I USED to love to get lost & read & dream, etc.). ...and there, under that glass, and sitting
on the beautiful wood were the most amazing original books I have ever seen.

The first book I saw was by Copernicus...
the next was Optics by I. Newton! I couldn't absorb it all. How did Lithuania get all these books? So many authors, I just could not believe my eyes... Blaise Pascal, Rousseau, Kant...I asked Valdas what was in the first room, the Gutenberg Bible? He just laughed & said it would take many signatures to get in there. I amazed that the books survived so many of the wars, bombings, fires, etc.
that seems to have hurt so much of Lithuania. He said that whomever was in power, the University was an asset. It was protected. Thank goodness for that.

The book that caused me to go weak at the knees, grab on to the counter & consider breaking the glass to read was by one of my fav authors; the one, the only, Machiavelli (I have uploaded the picture of the book 3x, no luck.I will try later.) Pete had to drag me out kicking & screaming.

Sooooo it seems appropriate to end with a quote from Niccollo':
...whenever men are not obliged to fight from necessity, they fight from ambition; which is so powerful in human breasts, that it never leaves them no matter to what rank they rise...

Birthday Blogging

My family has certainly become basic "birthday bloggers". I must say, however, that it was nice to read their good wishes, given I was away in Lithuania for my birthday. So, as I wondered what part of the trip to blog about next, I thought I would tell you about my birthday celebration.

Everywhere we went was great, but on this night (the best of the year, by the way) we went to a restaurant that was not a tourist spot. It had old polished wood & was warm & wonderful. There were old farm implements all around, like the old blacksmith above. People were singing and dancing, etc. etc. etc. It was very old style Lithuanian. We ate outdoors on a second floor balcony. I had my first potato sausage, we had cepilini and my new passion...Lithuanian beer snacks.

The group arranged to have musicians come and play for me. There were only two, but they sounded like an entire group. One of the men played a BIRBYNE . It had such a wonderful sound. First they sang happy birthday in English, then they did the Lithuanian happy birthday. Their version is much better than ours. It seemed to go for five minutes, the entire place sang, it got louder with each verse & everyone was standing up and waving their hands in the air...all in all a very good day.

Happy Birthday Nora!

Happy Birthday to my sweet baby Nora, who is soon to have a sweet baby of her own... Of course, that has never stopped me from entertaining. In order to feed my friends and family, number notwithstanding, I have always used my coffee table as my dining table.

I not only felt welcomed in Lithuania, I felt right at home. Everywhere we went we were met with feasting of the highest order. Huge amounts of amazing food and drink...and we all cozied in around the coffee table. But it was very real. Pete now knows the Welch clan is not his only large family. We were met at the "aeroharbor" in Vilnius by his and Edward's family & Sabina's family, all carrying beautiful flowers. It was quite moving.

Of course we were in Vilnius less than 10 minutes & we were stopped by the policia. I used a little judgment & did not call them what I was thinking. Pete, of course, jumped out & was Mr. Chicago Cop. They were not impressed...but they did allow us to continue on to the hotel.

The hotel we stayed at was the Apia hotel(www.apia.lt) in the Old Town section of Vilnius. I thought this would be one more wonderful religious monnument. I was so wrong. I have never been to such a sacred place. There is no description that can explain what it is like to have so many millions of crosses. These are not a testament to a man-made religion; but to the spirit of man. The Soviets did not let Lithuanians practice religion. Some people put up a few crosses; the Soviets knocked them down, many more put up crosses, they were knocked down & so it continued. Amazing sculptures slipped in the dead of night. It continues to this day.

So, almost 3 years to the day since we physically lost Tom (you are with me always in my heart), we placed a memorial in this very sacred spot to very special people:

To Sabina's father, a patriot who died trying to free Lithuania. We have no knowledge where he is buried, but we know where to honor him.

To Pete's brother Joe, who died fleeing the Soviets. We have no knowledge where he is buried, but we know where to honor him.

To Pete's Mom, Dad & my Dad. Pete and I can not find words to let you all know how blessed we are having all of you in our lives. This was such a team effort. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

As pictures become available we will post them. We have many. As Liza stated, the Flickr badge on the side & the link in her message will take you to the photographers pictures. I have an account that I am posting pictures the people have sent to me. They are great. I don't know how to do what the kids do, but I will ask them to help connect to my account. I hope this is the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/34056963@N00/

Nora also has hers posted on her blog. Tomorrow I will upload some from the ceremony on Friday, June 2nd. I will continue to add as we go along.

So now the question is what to do with this blog next?

We leave for Lithuania on Sunday night. Pete will be seeing his native country for the first time (he left as an infant). He will also be meeting some of his family. We are excited & perhaps we can share the trip?

Also, our Kelly did have a beautiful daughter on Thursday June 8th. Ella Rose is 7lbs. 7ozs, 21 inches. Family is doing well. So we have seven grandchildren to talk about; with #8 expected before the end of the year.

We could also discuss birds and being. Two of our other favorite activites.

All suggestions are welcome.

Say Cheese!

Hi, It's Liza. Her wedding allowed me not to focus on mine. I have no more excuses. It sounds as if it will be fun; many family & friends are planning on trying to come. It sounds like many will be flying into Midway, renting a car & driving to their hotel of choice. Here are more details as I know them.

Colleen will be at the farm on Friday getting things set up.

The ceremony will be at 4PM on Sat.

We are planning on having a shuttlebus run between the hotels & the farm & then taking people back to the hotels. We do not have this set up yet. Not sure of the times, but having the bus start at 2:30PM - having 5PM be the last pickup seems to make sense. I thought they could start again at 9PM returning to the hotels. This will be based on what is needed so if the times do not work, let me know.

If you are interested in standing up in the wedding; wear green...somewhere.

Breakfast will be on your own the next day. You are invited back the next day to enjoy family, friends & the farm. Pete will start grilling about 1 PM.

I hear there are a lot of questions, etc. Please contact us. People who are much more organized than I, keep asking questions. I do not know, at this time, the answers.

I do know that the goal is to have fun, enjoy yourselves and each other.

A fair question is: Where is Oakland? Not in California. See map above.

Airports: Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis are about equal distance. (St. Louis is just a bit closer). There is an airport in Champaign. If you fly your own plane you can get closer; call me.

The main road is I 57. Coming from Nebraska, one would take 80 to just east of Davenport & then take I 74 to I 57 south(around Champaign/Urbana). From St. Louis one would take I 70 to I 57 north.

Here are the directions from I 57:

1. TAKE I-57 TO EXIT 203 (ARCOLA) HIGHWAY 133

2. TURN LEFT (EAST) FOR 12 ½ MILES

3. TURN RIGHT ON 2175 EAST. THIS IS JUST BEFORE THE BRIDGE THAT CROSSES THE
EMBARRASS RIVER. IF YOU CROSS THE BRIDGE, TURN AROUND AND COME BACK!

4. FOLLOW THE ROAD (ABOUT ½ MI) TO THE FIRST AND ONLY HOUSE (381 NORTH).

TURN INTO THE DRIVEWAY. PHONE # 217-346-3129

Well this is a start. More to come.
